The article I read stated the store was making plenty of money but the
rent/lease was too high. I would contend that if the store was making
plenty of money, it could afford to make the payments needed.

One of my many jobs over the last 10 years was as the manager of a
Music/DVD department of a Barnes & Noble in Orange County, CA. When I
was hired, I was told the department had always operated at a loss and
there was no way to change that. The district manager/corporate office
imposed ridiculous restrictions and rules. Then, one day, the district
manager suffered a heart episode and she spent a few months
recovering. During those months, I rearranged the department,
retrained the staff to provide actual customer service (instead of the
same lame questions about club membership), and took a firm hand in
removing the teenagers who trashed the place (not all teenagers, just
that certain element just there to f*ck around). By the time the
district manager recovered, my department was running 12% above sales
plan.

My store manager was probably the best boss I ever worked for, but
corporate level decision-making was absolutely atrocious. Barnes &
Noble has been fighting hostile takeovers and buyouts, but in the
years since I worked there, I've not seen any alteration of their
outdated business model. In an era when everything they sell can be
bought cheaper and easier online, they must have customer service and
knowledgeable employees. It isn't about smiling and politely greeting
customers -- it is about not sounding like an idiot when customers
walk in the door.
