His pettiness hasn't changed since I ran into him at the Emmys years ago... back when he wasn't publicly outed as an atheist but was still not winning any awards. I think he isn't winning awards because he keeps leaning towards social commentary instead of joke telling. I like Maher and I like his show for the most part, but sometimes when he gets on his soapbox and the audience claps instead of laughs, I get turned off. Another way of saying that is that his show is just not that funny or entertaining. As a current affairs talk show it is amusing, and as a comedy show it is mildly informative. But it is not a very funny or entertaining comedy show, and it is not a very informative current affairs show. I am shocked every year that he even gets nominated for an Emmy. Stephen Colbert might be the most consistent, passionate and unapologetic liberal on television in the last 30 years (much more liberal than Stewart), and the Emmys seem to like him okay. -- TV or Not TV ....
