I only saw Letterman's morning show once, toward the end of its run.
After the news update (which Newman did from the newsroom), Letterman
showed off a prop Edwin Newman lunchbox - a child's metal lunchbox
emblazoned with Newman's name and face.

I remember reading about one episode early in the run, when the news
segments were still being done in front of a live audience. This was
during the Iranian hostage crisis. Newman opened his news segment by
announcing that Ayatollah Khomeni had died; there was shocked silence
from the audience, and then Newman smiled and said, "Just kidding."
