I have never watched a second of the program prior to watching the video linked above, but I agree with Mark: in all likelihood, the crowd had no real awareness she was there or assumed that, if she was, it was simply to offer support; the lights swung to her and Bergeron just as Burke was wrapping up, alerting the crowd that he was going to actually have a conversation with her; and the crowd reacted, throwing Burke for a loop (unless she's normally that awkward for the segues).
