I think it all depends on the context. Baltimore Colts veteran Art
Donovan guested on Carson and described one game when, after the
halftime festivities that involved horses, he had to dig his hands
into "horseshit" that was all over the field. NBC didn't censor the
word, and Carson gleefully repeated it, again unbleeped, to his great
delight.

Then, some years later, Dave aired a portion of a CBS drama that
included the word "bullshit." He noted how odd it was that he could
air that moment in already-broadcast drama uncensored, but he couldn't
quote the word without it being bleeped.
