I don't doubt that if this were any other indie (as not network owned
production houses are known in the UK) then perhaps Murdoch Snr wouldn't
have got his chequebook out. But in the UK, Shine has grown to be quite a
significant player.

As well as the mentioned shows below they own formats/shows including:

Masterchef - big in multiple territories with the US being a notable
exception, with endless spin-offs
Merlin - yup, it's still going even if NBC swiftly bailed
Don't Stop Believin'
Got To Dance - OK. Neither of these are big.
Hustle
Lip Service - this has got to show up on somewhere like Showtime
Outcasts - better SF show than the UK press would have you think

They also own Princess Productions that makes plenty of UK daytime fare -
low yield/high volume.

In overall terms, this is decent acquisition. Especially since in the UK his
broadcast arm, Sky TV, has been notably poor in producing anything beyond
live sport. Most other programming is US acquisition. Indeed the recently
launched Sky Atlantic is 100% built around HBO (with which it has an
exclusive deal) supplemented by other premium and less premium fare.
