We recently signed up for the free Netflix trial, and have lots of positive
things to say about the experience.

I don't understand why the distributors persist in removing extra DVD
material from discs slotted for rental use. It seems rather silly. Sure,
you might convince the most ardent fans to buy the disc, but I don't know a
lot of people who would buy something strictly for the extras, barring a
very very small number of rabid fans for a particular genre (say, the Lord
of the Rings DVDs [where the extras were longer than the films themselves]
or Star Wars or similar).

I will report that it is very unpredictable which discs you get will have
extras, and which will not. We watched "The King's Speech" recently, and
that disc contained all the extras you might want. Harry Potter 7.1 had
zero extras. "E.T." was chock full of extras, including stuff that was done
around the rerelease of the film sometime in the 1990s.

The turnaround time on the discs is incredibly fast. The mailers are
ingenious little devices, very easy and convenient to use. The streaming is
great, especially for those of us with kids who are off for the summer and
looking for new fun things to watch (I'll take "Ponyo" over the Disney
Channel's current lineup any freakin' day of the week).

It will be interesting to see if they have to significantly jack up the
price soon. For someone who needs a babysitter to go see a non-kid movie,
even jacking up the price to $19.95 per month would seem reasonable to me.
Crossing the $20 threshold might make things difficult for them, though.
That becomes more difficult to justify on the monthly budget.

Well there is enough content on there to bide your time while you wait. I'm
also one of those "power users" of netflix. Mostly streaming, in fact that's
what my plan is.

Not only one, certainly, but a finite number. And odds are, somebody
somewhere is wanting it.
