Monday's Marc Maron podcast was a live show which runs 1 hour and 47
minutes so I can't say I'd recommend the whole show just for this:
Seth Meyers was the last guest and he talked about doing this year's
White House dinner. He said he learned from another writer (I think it
was Bob Smigel helping Conan prepare but I'm not sure) that the most
important thing is that people won't react to you, they will react to
the president's reaction to you. So if the president isn't smiling and
laughing at your material you will lose the room. Meyers said he
prepared about 90 jokes and was ready to drop anything he felt was
going in the wrong direction since it left him with a lot of material.
At one point he started taking on the field of Republican candidates,
realized that the president wasn't going to allow to let himself be
seen laughing at his potential opponents and the room went cold so he
had to drop that material.
