Lisa De Moraes had a good column on this story:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/spotted-ryan-seacrest-with-nbc-news-execs-is-today-in-his-future/2011/12/08/gIQAcidbgO_story.html

She starts:

The Reporters Who Cover Television — settling in for the long winter’s
nap that starts shortly after the November sweeps and generally lasts
until the start of Winter TV Press Tour in January — were rudely
jolted out of their slumber and into action Thursday when actual news
erupted:

NBC News suits had been seen dining with Ryan Seacrest. In Los Angeles.

Her take is that Matt Lauer's agent has been trying to negotiate
Matt's new contract through the media via a hint that he won't re-sign
and NBC is responding by hinting that Seacrest makes Matt replaceable.
Her NBC source suggests that Seacrest might join Today for the 9
O'clock hour.
