In a broadcasting game-changer, Clear Channel has made a deal with indie country music label Big Machine (the home of Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw and, most lucratively, Taylor Swift) where the label will be receiving a cut of CC's ad revenues, the first known instance of terrestrial radio paying the equivalent of royalties to record companies (not counting, of course, payola): http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/05/clear-channel-and-taylor-swift-agree-to-reinvent-royalty-system/ Until now, radio stations have only paid composers through license fees to ASCAP, BMI and SESAC--on the other hand, Sirius XM and Internet streamers have had to pay royalties to the artists and record companies along with the composers' licenses. This deal with the nation's largest radio station owner and an indie label riding a very hot streak right now is very likely to lead to similar record company deals--will it also lead to charges of payola?
