Okay - so the ratings are in for the X-Factor Finale, and now we have the
full comparisons for the two singing shows this Fall vs AI last Spring:

The Voice 12-12: 2.4 (Demo); 8.071M (Total Viewers)
X-Factor 12-12: 3.1 (Demo); 9.66M (Total Viewers)
American Idol 5-12: 6.1 (Demo); 20.71M (Total Viewers)

AI got a higher Demo rating, and more total viewers, last spring than The
Voice and the X-Factor got combined this week.

By the numbers then, I guess AI is the best singing show, followed by the
X-Factor with The Voice bringing up the rear. That is distorted by just how
deep of a black ratings hole NBC has been I suppose - if X-Factor and The
Voice switched networks their numbers would probably be
basically reversed also.

I can't think of a good way to compare these shows directly in terms of how
many "records" (I am not sure what they call a downloaded song) contestants
from them have sold, or concert tickets they have sold. This is complicated
because it seems the shows take turns with some kind of special
relationship with i-tunes. Maybe it was just the freak association with the
US women's gymnastics teams during the Olympics, but even just limiting it
to a comparison over the last 12 months it seems like the AI contestants
have made left more of a footprint in pop music than the other two shows.
