Los Angeles has lost the voice of the voices. Though I never met Gary Lycan personally, I was a huge fan of his writing. We corresponded a few times via Facebook. He was kind enough to quote me a few times for articles he wrote about LA radio. He passed away today, and with him the ONLY reason to read the OC Register is gone. I'd link to his column, but the Register is blocked by a paywall now.
With Don Barrett's retirement from laradio.com, there is nobody left in LA whose job is devoted to covering broadcast radio in the number two market in the nation. One of the most influential forms of media in one of the largest markets in the country, and the beat desk sits empty. Massive mergers in media were announced today, but there is no voice to tell this community how it will affect them. Rest in peace, sir. You were a dedicated journalist with a passion for the subjects you wrote about. They don't make 'em like you anymore. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
