I think it varies from show to show. I never watched "Will and Grace" (if 
only because I loathe Megan Mullaly), but it seemed like every week they 
had two or three stunt-cast guest stars who were slumming to appear on a 
hot sitcom. On the other hand, "The Good Wife" (which I've only just 
started watching in the last couple of weeks) always seems to have 
name-brand guests, but (from what I've gathered) who have been hired in a 
multi-episode capacity because they're good actors (and in New York).
