I know, he took over summer hosting duties last week. But the very positive reviews he got often noted that he was mostly competently delivering great material that could easily have been read by Stewart. I read one review that the main takeaway was that it is the writing staff at TDS that is extraordinary, while any monkey can read the scripts.
I did not think that was quite fair, but there was something to it. But last night's show, the first segment of which featured Oliver's patented takes on the beauty of the german language, and riffs on one of his favorite targets, Vlad Putin.
