the main reason they're in New York is because New York is giving them a boatload of tax breaks to move the show there.
I tried watching the show online last night and I couldn't finish. I almost tuned out with the first sketch featuring Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake singing songs from the 1980s. And then I've already seen a lot of the funnier sketches. Finally, it came to some lame sketch in the middle of the show and I decided I had better things to do with my time. I like Jimmy Fallon. But the sweet spots for his comedy tastes do not align with what I like. I'm not sure how he will translate to 11:35 p.m. Maybe they need a radical change like that to get the younger demo. If Leno does flee to CNN, he could be pulling away a big chunk of viewers who don't like Fallon.
