My suspicion of how this all went down: Dave had already said that this
contract would be his last and the phone call was just to confirm that he
hadn't changed his mind on it. Colbert and Moonves had already agreed that
he was going to take over, and the week's delay on the announcement was
because the timing caught them off guard and they still had to get the i's
dotted and t's crossed.
