I did the reverse trip (LA-SF via the PCH) back in October 2011.  Left LA on a
Sunday and arrived in SF on a Wednesday, and felt I should have taken more
time.  Spent the night in Morro Bay, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz on the way north.
The northern half of the PCH has more to see and do than the southern half.
But I don't drink, so the wine map may have something else to say.

There's a butterfly sanctuary at Natural Bridge State Beach in Santa Cruz.
You'll be a bit early for the migration, so I'd check beforehand to see if the
butterflies will be there in force.  The beachside amusement park is arguably
better than Santa Monica's, but it will be open only on the weekends after
Labor Day.
The 17-mile drive in Monterey is worth the toll ($10 when I drove it).  It will
take you through the various Pebble Beach courses, and has to be cheaper than
their greens fees.  Any Steinbeck fans in the group may wish to at least cruise
Cannery Row (which ends at the Aquarium).

The Big Sur section is amazing, and you'll need to take your time due to the
twists, turns, and hills.  It may be worthwhile to pack stuff for this section
rather than depending on roadside eats.

You'll be a month early for peak elephant seal viewing near San Simeon, but
there will probably be some out and about.  It's also near Hearst Castle.  I
didn't venture to the Castle proper, but the Visitor Center is full of Hearst
excess.
I just cruised through Santa Barbara, but I have to think there would be things
there of interest to your group.  Sunday afternoon was just too crowded for me
to find a place to park and explore further.

I didn't go through Pismo Beach (though unlike Bugs Bunny, I wasn't trying to)
or San Luis Obispo.

Subject: [TV orNotTV] OT: travel SFO/LAX suggestions

So, here's my usual email to the list about "I'm travelling somewhere and would
like to hear suggestions". So my wife and I, and another couple, are planning a
trip to San Fran, wineries, drive down PCH, LA area, and then fly back home.
trip length is likely 7-10 days.   Likely this September 2015. While I have
done the LA area on my own in the last ten years (work trips, Coachella x3) and
fit in some studio tours, Santa Monica, LLS, sitcom taping, Kimmel, etc..... I
haven't been north of Burbank :). any tips/suggestions appreciated.  thanks
all.  --
