The first time Steven Hill originated a role on a long-running series, it was as the leader of the IMF on "Mission: Impossible" (he left after the first season and was replaced by Peter Graves). Two decades later, he created the role of Adam Schiff on "Law and Order" and played for the first ten years of that series' run--he retired from acting after over 45 years on stage and screen thereafter:
