The on-field officials don’t specifically “know” there’s a promo running. 
There’s an official who stands on the sidelines who’s in communication with the 
control truck, and he’s the person the referee looks at for signals on whether 
the network is in a commercial break or not — he wears bright orange gloves to 
make him and his signals easier to spot on the sidelines; the usual signal for 
“we’re in commercial” is that he puts one arm across his chest.
