So I'm back from Comic-Con in San Diego.  Didn't get tickets (standby or
otherwise) for Conan, couldn't get into the Star Trek: Discovery panel (waited
3.5 hours, and it wasn't even in the really big room, Hall H), but I did see
the panel for Amazon Prime's live-action The Tick.
(As for San Diego, thanks to this visit, I am now a fan of poke - the food that
is.  Their Comic-Con is arguably too big for me to really enjoy it.)

Before Ben Edlund, David Fury and most of the cast came out to answer
questions, we got to watch episode 2 (you can watch episode 1 on Amazon - no
Prime membership needed).  As best as I can tell, episode 2 starts right after
the end of episode 1.  The first six episodes of the season will be available
August 25, with the rest of the first season sometime in the spring.

I came to The Tick through the 90s animated series, and watched all of Fox's
edition.  Enjoyed both of them immensely.  I liked what I saw of this version a
lot and would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed either of its television
predecessors.
I picked up two main differences for this version, which were reinforced by the
comments from the panel.
While it may be called The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz), sidekick Arthur (Griffin
Newman), is arguably the protagonist of the show.  Maybe that could change in a
season 2.
The superheroes and villains are as absurd/silly as before, but The City and
its people are treated a bit more seriously.  I'm not sure I can explain this
better without spoiling, but I think the idea is to heighten the satire of
superheroes and villains by grounding the civilians a bit more.
Serafinowicz nails it IMO, though I'm sure fans could debate the merits of his
approach versus Warburton
and/or Coleman at length.  Jackie Earle Haley is the main villain.
While I can't say it's worth shelling out for Prime membership (I don't think
any *one* TV show is worth a streaming subscription), I certainly recommend the
show for those already subscribed.
(And yes, I will be subscribing to CBS All Access for Star Trek: Discovery, but
I will be using the service for all of the Star Trek shows and other programs
in the CBS library.)
