The night was a reminder both of how hard it is to do live television and
how great people living on the Spectrum and their family and friends can
be. Apparently one of the real big challenges with live tv is getting the
TelePrompTer right. Despite (because of?) the many glitches, a really
enjoyable show. I particularly loved the video on the guy training police
forces how to recognize Austistic people and not shoot them, and the
closing number by the amazing Jodi DiPiazza.

I had the chance to see Chris Rock live in Oakland a few weeks ago, who
gave a great, if somewhat defensive, show. People are funny in different
ways, and I appreciate those whose funny comes at the end of a lot of work
and feedback and re-writes. Rock does the work, but he is also just
spontaneously funny, and he showed that on this show - I thought his ad
libs through the prompter problems were the fabulous. The three stand-up
sets were all great. There were some low points (Howie Mandel- nuff said).

When they started this years ago I worried they were too close to
amplifying some of the junk science that plagues the Austism world, and
which both exploits and gets aggressively pushed by parents who are scared
and desperate and heart-broken. Somewhere along the line they got their
shit together on that (little or no discussion of an “Autism epidemic”, or
of unsupported treatments) and a focus on programs designed to help people
live their lives. I think I read something about Smiegel explicitly making
this change, but I can’t remember the details.

For those who don’t like to feed the HBO monster, the show is available for
free on the youtube:
