While I've no doubt that HBO would indeed put together a full catch-up
segment/episode to get viewers up to speed, I'd be surprised if the movie
wasn't in some way made accessible to those who've never previously watched
Deadwood, with plenty in there for those who are familiar with it.  That
kind of thing is always a challenge, but one that writers are capable of
navigating.

I would imagine that the movie will have its own major standalone story-arc
that is enough for newer or less diligent viewers to follow, including
brief re-introductions to the key characters, while offering some kind of
resolutions to stories of those main characters.

Even the most serialised of dramas offer entry points to new viewers. There
will be people who tune in to the final season of Game of Thrones who've
never watched a previous one. I know it doesn't make sense, but it'll
happen, and they'll be very slightly catered for too.
