And it's specifically live because that fact was originally used as an 
incentive to get all of NBC's affiliates to air it at the same time. What it 
replaced on the schedule was a rerun of "The Tonight Show," which a number of 
affiliates either delayed until later Saturday night, or carried on Sunday 
night.

That's also why it's 90 minutes in length -- that's how long "The Tonight Show" 
was in 1975.
