The power of the unions around that time was impressive. The really big one was in 1979 when ITV went off air for 11 weeks. At the time there were only three networks in the UK, and the other two were BBC1 and BBC2. So the only commercial channel was effectively shut down.
The audiences that the BBC got at the time were consequently enormous since there was literally nothing else to watch.
