Yes, the finances are broadcast television in general and late night in
particular have sharply declined. I would believe that the only way CBS
could make reasonable profit in that timeslot is to ask Colbert to take a
significant price cut one that perhaps he would have to refuse.

But this is the bullshit in their statement:

“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late
night.  It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or
other matters happening at Paramount.”

They obviously made this decision to further pleasure Trump in order to
grease the wheels for the sale. Perhaps the show would’ve been canceled or
terminated anyway because they couldn’t meet Colbert’s price, but that’s
not what’s happening here.
