Hi Chandra:

Here are three sources, where you can buy a laptop from.

 A. Dealer
 B. Retailer
 C. LifeStyle

Dealer is a volume player and hence sells you at least price.

Life style retail outlets (Hyd Central, Digital Shoppee, IMAX etc.)
with air-conditioning and 'yes sir, yes sir' staff will charge
you the most.

So, the strategy should be to go to the lifestyle shop, see all
the products, smile, enjoy the AC, ask all the questions, leave your
number and walk out.

If you know of a friend/relative who also wants to buy a laptop,
then you can bundle your purchase to extract a real good deal.

Here are some observations that helped me. They might help you too.

. Try to do a cash deal
and avoid credit card if you can (2.5% xtra).

. Try to squeeze the vendor by showing him that you will
buy it right now if he makes the price interesting enough.
  Dangle the cash carrot.

. Battery quality is important.
Dell, Compaq, HP laptop batteries are better than Acer, Asus,
  Averatec, BenQ or Sony.

. Each of the laptop manufacturer has one wide-screen laptop model.
  Go for it.
  eg. Dell D620
      Compaq C301TU

. The best time to upgrade memory is at time of purchase.
You will be able to exchange it at par.
Replace 1 512MB DIMM with 1GB DIMM if you can.

. Check the AMD Turion64 mobile technology model
  ie. whether - ML-37, ML-34, ML-32, ML-30, MT-34, MT-32 or MT-30

  Note, AMD uses "two"-letter coding
  first letter - processor class
second letter - degree of mobility
                  (as measured by power consumption)
mobility is higher if power consumption is lower.
  eg. MT > ML

two digit numbers indicate higher relative performance.

  eg. ML-37 > ML-34

. Integrated 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN is better with Intel PRO/Wireless
  than Broadcom/Realtek etc.

. Avoid Bluetooth if you can.
In the end both your laptop and your PDA are infected with virus.

. Printer port is not necessary.
It eats up space for ventilation.

. Weight of laptop equals
(wt of laptop hardware + power adapter + mouse + all stuff you put in the
bag).
There is no such thing as weight of laptop on table/lap.

. N-in-1 integrated device means less chips and
so it is less price, not more.

. Altec Lansing speakers are real good.
The sound does not crack at higher volumes.

Hope this helps.
