There are two options available:
. Gentoo 2007.0
the installation is minimalistic and yet complete from
the core system point of view
there is no X server etc.
you can emerge gcc
. FreeBSD
a complete Operating System with compiler tool chain
and complete high quality documentation in less than 50 MB.
Gentoo is inspired by FreeBSD model of professional Open Source
software engineering and has a 'ports' and 'packages' model
You can install software from source code as and when you need it.
Both the OS run on intel Pentium III and above with considerable ease.
I'm currently running a dual boot on intel PIII 533 MHZ
with 256 MB SDRAM and 8.4GB IDE HDD and the system rocks !
