Hi all:

For those of us, planning to apply to Open Source projects
(either as part of GSOC-2008 or otherwise), it may be
a good idea to write up a proposal or statement of purpose (SoP).

This will help us structure our thoughts, be able to check on
the list of unknowns and also have them in an actionable form.

One possible template is
http://www.perlfoundation.org/how_to_write_a_proposal

A generic one would be:

 Name

 Email
Where we can contact you ?

 Project Title

 Synopsis
  Short description

 Benefits to the <Open-Source-Project-Name>

 Deliverables
What will be your output ?

 Project Details
How are you going to go about it

 Project Schedule
   When do you start ?
   When do you stop ?

 Bio
   Your Resume
   Why you ?

Another thing that the GSOC-2008 applicants should do is
to checkout the mentor, have a brief exchange of mails if
possible, read his/her blog.

In general all folks interested in contributing to
an Open Source project should try to catch up on the
personality and culture of a specific project.

thanks
Saifi.
