The choice of a PCI based NIC on Linux/BSD depends on:
 . performance profile
 . chipset support


Here are the chipsets to *avoid*
 . Broadcom
 . Connexant PrismGT
 . TI


Regarding the performance profile, a desktop system 
and a ftp server office have different requirements.

You would be the best judge on what you intend to use
your Pentium system for.
