Give the command firefox from shell:

$ firefox &

The console messages will tell what's happening if at all. Have u
created some profile or such for the firefox. Is the problem persistent
from a different user account (if the .mozilla* directory has gone bad).

Have u been seeing this problem recently or since begining??

I wud suggest re-installing the same firefox if u have started seeing
the problem only now. Firefox 3 may have it's own set of problems (some
plugins are still not supported on it including google toolbar &
delicious) - the things I miss most on ubuntu 8.04. FC9 is on its way so
may want to wait for it.

The distros usually have a kernel they support. Getting a later kernel
may not work well. I don't know if yum/apt such tools allow u to move to
a later kernel unless supported. I wud recommend upgrading the distro
itself. If u can devote a partition to ubuntu then nothing like it... :)

I shared recently a link on getting a custom kernel on ubuntu. Getting
the .config right takes an effort - somethings may not work easily.
