Why don't u try lampp to run drupal?It is easy to configure.
Here is the download link for lampp
http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-linux-1.7.tar.gz

After unpacking the gzipped file go to lampp/htdocs folder and extract the
drupal file there.
Before doing this u should run lamp server by running lamp script.
