Bother, the computer gremlins resent John message rather than the one I had
written. I'll give it another try...The smoothness or appearance of the "seam"
where the two edges pull together does depend on the relation between threading
direction of the card, which way the card is turned, which way the warp passes
through the shed, and whether you bring the weft over or under the warp. In the
TWIST Spring 2008 issue Cindy Myers has a great chart for keeping this
straight. It does make a difference. I made several nice smooth cords following
her directions. But then, getting a bit sassy I suppose, I did not look at my
chart and on the next cord noticed that the weft was showing in the joint. When
I corrected the direction of how the weft passed over or under the warp, things
smoothed out nicely. To summarize Cindy's chart:
If cards are threaded Z direction and turned F, OR if the cards are
threaded S directions and you turn them B, pass the weft through the shed
R→L and then under the warp OR pass the weft through shed L→R and
over the warp. If the cards are threaded S direction and you turn them F, OR
if the cards are threaded Z direction and you turn them B, pass the warp
through the shed R→L and over the warp OR pass the weft through the shed
L→R and under the warp. Hope this makes sense. I tried very hard
to get this to appear as a chart but the same gremlins keep changing it to
straight text...As you can see, there are various options for making the smooth
join.
