Hello everyone, I was a lurker on the tablet weaving digest, and received an invite to join the group. So here I am.
I'm a self-taught tablet weaver. I started off teaching myself simple Indian finger weaving, then stumbled across tablet weaving on the web and was intrigued. So, with an ebay-acquired battered copy of Marjorie and William Snow's 'Step by Step Tablet Weaving', a secondhand inkle loom, a cut-up ceral box and a ruler... I began. I was very fortunate that the lady who sold me the loom, also offered a copy of Peter Collingwood's book on Tablet Weaving. In hindsight, I realise how lucky I was to get a copy of his work 'just like that.' I've made seven bands so far, three of them double-faced. I liked the notion of quotation bands from the outset, and later came across Linda Hendrickson's graphed alphabets... which together with Peter Collingwood's phenomenal work, allowed me to turn the notion into reality, and have some fun making up capital letters along the way. The quotes take a long time, especially if you are daft enough to try it with very fine linen thread and a lot of words, but... ahhhh.... when it's finished! Besides, as a greenhorn, daft mistakes are part of the fun. Just as well, because there have been more than a few dodgy moments. Now did I turn that back, or forward? Or have a complete brainstorm and manage not to turn it at all? I did have a particularly memorable twist-up that led to 2-3 hours of brain melt-down - the letter 'y' now has the potential to send shudders down my spine. Band number eight is on the loom, and is a double leaf pattern - courtesy of Guntram's Tablet Weaving Thingy and downloadable patterns - in a deep blue, silver grey and gold linen. Gill
