Thanks. The pictures clarified things. The pick-up terminology is not commonly used in card (tablet) weaving as far as my reading has gone. I've seen the term more in other forms - backstrap, harness (shaft) and inkle weaving, for example. It sounds like the reference was about double-faced (or double-weave). Brocading in card weaving might be closer to a 'pick-up' process.
