Hello Phil, It was as if you read my mind. I always recommend *Zurb* although it doesn't have as many JS components as Bootstrap does such as Modal & a couple other. As for me, I prefer using my custom frameworks that serve very little that works as foundation but it doesn't bloat your codebase with anything unnecessary.
Bootstrap is convenient for people who do not want to spend or rather do not have time to write on their own. Nor do they care the ugliness that Bootstrap may bring to your codebase when used *IRRESPONSIBLY. *Hence, as I can notice you are a Web designer yourself, I recommend you start documenting the code snippets that you are really proud of & work well & create your own framework. Use GIT for version control. That way your code is safe. I recommend this post highly.
