Had the same problem. Check out the example: http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/components.html#buttonGroups you'll see each button is wrapped in its own <div class="btn-group">. If you do that each button will have some margin. It's probably not semanticly correct if a btn-group is actually not a button group but that's how they have it in the Bootstrap demos so maybe someone else has a better explanation...
