I suspect a large part of the answer to that is simply "Because they can." Unlike other large social networks, the data in Twitter is open by default. I say this partly because I realized that's what grabbed me about Twitter, much more than the service itself. I was attracted to the fact that a lot of social data was easily accessible. I'm curious if anyone can cite a similarly open, large social network (are there any?) that hasn't seen much third-party analysis and such. Nick
