It is totally possible Chief, but it just seems a bit overkill if all you want is to get a valid twitter screen name.
If you are asking a user to authorize your app, IMHO, most users will expect something in return. My thoughts are to provide the most transparency to users while also providing the least friction to them. What about the no-auth call suggestion I made? Seems simpler for you and the user.
