情報ありがとうございます
twitter側の仕様なのですね。
ふだん emacs -nw で CUI環境で使用しているので
ずっとxAuthで使っていました。
とりあえず、最初にWEBブラウザを使って
OAuth認証でDMのpermissionをつけておけば
その後はxAuthでも問題ないようです。
