OK, think I've cracked it. I looked at how pidInList was created in the example at
http://www.typo3wizard.com/en/snippets/menus/menu-with-recursive-count-of-subpages.html and did something similar. I still feel like there ought to be a better way though (i.e. with tagging / flagging) so suggestions still more than welcome...
