Any good ideas to handle the messy backend?
Did you use any other skin on the BE at 4.2?
If the image was taken at this site https://www.morbaerhaven.dk I would
guess that this was NOT using default t3_skin as the login to BE looks
pretty different (i.e. old style) from what it should look like.
Either you restore old version and remove the old skin and add t3_skin
there or you hack it directly in localconf.php of the upgraded version.

DID you try that as you BE is STILL OLD version, i.e. before TYPO3 4.x
