It's possible to merge some, thus getting the same result.

Well, yes, but if page structure is complex (let's imagine some 5 columns, 8 rows and all of them are somehow merged) and it is already used at the website, but later customer wants to have at some content area two columns instead of one - and it may be a pain to make it with merging only and keep all the colPos numbers, that were defined previously.

Yes, sort of. Take the whole page as a grid and merge the columns to get
the column ratios you want.

Simple example: Start with 3 columns and merge the two right columns to
get a layout that would consist of the left column being 1/3 of the page
width and the right column being 2/3 of the page width.
