The geniality of TYPO3 is that it's extension based. So even it it would be in the core there is no reason why you could not use an other extension would you choose to.

But that's exactly my point. TYPO3 works great as long you can stick to the
core, but as soon as you need a third party extension it immediately
becomes tricky due to the poor quality of a lot of them. Therefore important
extensions like news, realurl, a mail system etc should be part of the core.

No! These important extensions should get support from people like you, who 
obviously have a lot of knowledge and also have the usecases.

Point well taken.
I personally think it will be easier to rewrite them from the round up.
