For U-Boot we are trying to use binman internally, but binman can also be used for the 'final step'. See this talk. There is also a video somewhere. https://2019.osfc.io/talks/binman-a-data-controlled-firmware-packer-for-u-boot.html Let's try to collaborate on the firmware packaging.
