As Karl stated, the index file location is hard coded into the file header. You can amend this using the SET.INDEX command. This can either reset the index path to the local location OR clear the index path so you can rebuild. Copying files with indices attached is one of those gotchas that frequently messes up systems, particularly if someone wants to make a test account on the same machine and ends up with test files accessing live indices.
