LeRoy,

We migrated from HP-UX to Windows (not quite the question you
asked, but I hope still relevant) a couple of years ago.

No problems at all with any UniVerse code, but of course all
our shell-scripts had to be re-written. Because all of the
O/S interaction had been modularised into common service
Routines, it was not a major task, although the
'idiosyncrasies' of double-quoted strings in a "DOS -c ..."
Call gave us some grief, which you will perhaps remember.

Rewriting all the shell scripts (in KixStart, although in
retrospect VBScript might have been better) took one Systems
Administrator about a month part-time.
The UV program changes to call into the changed environment
took one programmer about three weeks. If your client's
code is sprinkled with "sh -c ..." calls, then it's a whole
different question, of course.
A month on Development, six or seven weeks on Test, then
into Production on the new hardware.
Oh yes, and an upgrade from 9.6 to 10.0 at the same time.

Why did we do it? Easy - $$$
The entire cost of the new Windows system, including the
hardware, all the upgrade costs and annual licensing fees,
was less than half the annual maintenance & licensing fee
on the HP hardware & software.
Or to put it another way, we could have paid two more staff
on the annual savings.

The bean-counters find that kind of hard to ignore.

Oh yes, and our main Payroll took about one-third as long as
before.

Mike
