We figured it out. The files I can't write to have one thing in common: indices on I-Descriptors that run Datatel-specific "Envision" code. That code won't run if the environment isn't properly set up. And I have no idea how to make "FR.JUMPSTART" and "ENVINIT" run as part of an NFA connection. :::sigh::: All this because we could never get ODBC to work from Unix.
