Great discussion! One thing that I have learned in my 25 years in IT is that early on, I underestimated the importance of maintainability. I noticed this when I got into management. I had a programmer who seemed to be slow, but when you looked at her code, it was BEAUTIFUL. Anyone could easily modify her code because she made the intent SO obvious through structure and comments. The time saved working with her code FAR outweighed the extra time she took coding it.
