Thanks - that's a good thing to know. But it's not the case here. The error is that the subroutine never gets called, if I've got it right. Certainly, none of the DataBasic code seems to run (almost the first thing it does is write diagnostic tracking stuff to a file, and that never happens). And all the arguments are assigned in my VB app before I call it, so they should still be assigned when it returns :-)
