Susan and Kevin, thanks for the quick replies. I did not restore the index file into the other folder. It would have taken too much time. I tried to copy the original X_file (no TV pun intended) to the new name but it still didn't work. What finally worked for me was to do what Kevin suggested. I created a small file and created an index on it. Then I did a build.index followed by delete.index. After that, I copied the X_tempfile to X_file and it all works now; without any usable index, of course. But I can live without the index.
